Meet the Bears New Coaching Staff

If the Bears are going to unseat the Packers this year, it’s going to start with new head coach Matt Eberflus. His staff will be key, too, as Chicago will start the 2022 season with new schemes both offensively and defensively.  Let’s meet the staff, one with a strong emphasis on the team’s secondary, that fans hope will bring a championship to the Windy City in the near future.

• Head Coach: Eberflus – Named the 17th head coach in franchise history on January 27th, 2022. Ebeflus comes to Chicago with 30 years of coaching experience, including 13 in the NFL, and just completed his fourth season as defensive coordinator of the Colts. Under Eberflus the Colts were the only NFL defensive unit to be ranked in the top-10 in scoring, run defense, and takeaways in each of the past two seasons.
  • • Offensive Coordinator: Luke Getsy – Contracted to be Chicago’s offensive coordinator on January 30, 2022, Getsy, 37, possesses 15 seasons of coaching experience, including seven years in the NFL. He spent the last three seasons as Packers quarterbacks coach while also serving as Green Bay’s passing game coordinator in 2020-21. In Getsy’s seven seasons in Green Bay, the Packers made six playoff appearances, winning five NFC North titles. Aaron Rodgers won back-to-back MVPs with Getsy.
      • Quarterbacks: Andrew Janocko – Named Chicago’s quarterbacks coach on February 3, 2022. Janocko, 33, boasts 11 years of coaching experience, including the last seven in different roles with the Vikings. This year, Janocko helped veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins throw for 4,221 yards with 33 touchdowns, seven interceptions, and a 103.1 passer rating.
      • Wide Receivers/Passing Game Coordinator: Tyke Tolbert – The 20-year coaching veteran spent the past four seasons as the Giants’ wide receivers coach, a position he previously held with the Cardinals, Bills, Panthers, and Broncos.
      • Running Backs: David Walker
      • Tight Ends: Jim Dray – The journeyman tight end just completed his second season on Arizona’s coaching staff as an offensive quality control coach in 2021. Prior to his work with the Cardinals, Dray coached at his alma mater, Stanford, as an offensive assistant in 2018 prior to working in 2019 as an offensive quality control coach with the Browns.
      • Assistant Tight Ends: Tim Zetts – Brings 14 years of coaching experience to Chicago, with his most recent stop coming in Green Bay, where he served as an offensive assistant for the Packers during the 2021 season.
      • Offensive Line: Chris Morgan – The NFL lifer has coached in two Super Bowls, and this will be his 15th season overall as an NFL offensive line coach after completing his first year as an assistant offensive line coach with the Steelers. Morgan assisted with an offensive line that helped pave the way for rookie running back Najee Harris to rush for 1,200 yards, the fourth-best total in the league, breaking the franchise rookie rushing record of 1,055 yards set by Franco Harris back in 1972.
      • Assistant Offensive Line: Austin King – Brings 10 years of coaching experience – two with the Raiders after five seasons with the Dayton Flyers, including his last three as assistant coach/offensive coordinator.
      • Offensive Quality Control: Omar Young – Joins the Bears with 13 years of coaching experience, including three in the NFL with two additional years of experience on the personnel side. Young most recently served as the running backs & co-special teams coordinator at Eastern Illinois University.
    • Defensive Coordinator: Alan Williams – Named Chicago’s defensive coordinator on February 2, 2022. He brings 30 years of coaching experience to Chicago, including 21 seasons in the NFL, the last four with the Colts, his second stint with the team. His first tenure included the 2006 Super Bowl team. As a secondary coach in Indianapolis, his defense recorded 18 postseason interceptions, including seven during the team’s playoff run to their Super Bowl XLI win over Chicago in 2006.
      • Defensive Line: Travis Smith – Joins the Bears with 12 years of coaching experience, including the last 10 with the Raiders. Smith most recently served as the Raiders’ assistant defensive line coach the past two seasons, where he coached alongside King.
      • Assistant Defensive Line: Justin Hinds – Comes to Chicago from Western Carolina University, where he served as defensive coordinator for the Catamounts in 2021. Prior to that, he served as the defensive line coach for two seasons at Central Michigan.
      • Linebackers: Dave Borgonzi – Named Chicago’s linebackers coach on February 2, 2022. Borgonzi joins the Bears with 16 years of coaching experience, including 11 seasons in the NFL, including stops with the Colts (2018-21), Buccaneers (2014-17), and Cowboys (2011-13). Most recently, Borgonzi spent the past four seasons with Eberflus in Indianapolis, tutoring the team’s linebackers.
      • Defensive Backs: James Rowe -Joins the Bears with 15 years of coaching experience, including four seasons in the NFL. He most recently served as the cornerbacks coach for the Colts alongside Eberflus. Prior to joining Eberflus’ defensive staff in Indianapolis in 2021, Rowe spent the 2020 season at Appalachian State University where he tutored the cornerbacks.
      • Assistant Defensive Backs: David Overstreet II – Hired as Chicago’s assistant defensive backs coach on February 2, 2022, Overstreet spent the past four seasons as an assistant with the Colts under Eberflus.
      • Safeties: Andre Curtis – Joins the Bears with 22 years of coaching experience, including 16 in the NFL. He spent the past seven seasons with the Seahawks, where six defensive backs combined to make nine trips to the Pro Bowl in Kam Chancellor (2015), Richard Sherman (2015, 2016), Earl Thomas (2015, 2017), Shaquill Griffin (2019), Jamal Adams (2020) and Quandre Diggs (2020, 2021).
      • Defensive Quality Control: Ronell Williams  – A holdover from the previous coaching staff, Williams will enter his third season as a defensive quality control coach with the Bears after being hired by the club on January 18, 2019.
    • Special Teams Coordinator: Richard Hightower – Returns to Chicago after previously serving as assistant special teams coach for the Bears in 2016. Hightower arrives with 15 years of NFL coaching experience, including the last five as special teams coordinator with the 49ers.
      • Special Teams Assistant: Carlos Polk – A Rockford, IL native, Polk brings 12 years of coaching experience to Chicago, including 11 seasons in the NFL. Polk was most recently a part of the Jaguars organization, where he served as the assistant special teams coach.
  • • Head Strength and Conditioning Coach: Jim Arthur – A staff member of the Bears’ 2006 NFC championship team, Arthur possesses 20 years of NFL experience, including 11 in Chicago where he worked as part of the team’s strength and conditioning staff from 2005-15.
      • Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach: Anthony Hibbert – The native of Stuart, FL once worked for the New York Mets, serving as an assistant strength and conditioning coach in their farm system for two years starting in 2002.
      • Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach: Casey Kramer – Another holdover from the previous regime, Kramer joined the Bears in 2018 after spending the previous four years with Tennessee Tech as their director of athletic performance.
