Chicago Bears Score and Recap (Week 8): Bears 34, Seahawks 17 – Simmons Shines in Bears Win
The Bears put together a statement win against the defending champion Seahawks at Lumen Field Monday night. New addition Jeffery Simmons had a big impact on the defense and Caleb Williams did an excellent job against the best defense in football.
Chicago began the scoring with an epic 17-play drive that ended with 1-yard touchdown pass to Luther Burden III. Seattle made a field goal early in the second quarter to reduce the deficit to 7-3. Cairo Santos made a couple of kicks later in the quarter to put his team on top 13-3 right before halftime.
The Seahawks offense started clicking during a two-minute drill at the end of the half. Sam Darnold hit his favorite target, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, for a 43-yard touchdown which brought the home team within 13-9 after the extra point was missed.
The Bears had another long march down the field in the third quarter that was capped by a 1-yard touchdown run by D’Andre Swift. Seattle had a field goal blocked on their ensuing drive, but then a Colston Loveland fumble set up a 7-yard TD pass to Cooper Kupp which brought the score to 20-17 after a two-point conversion.
Chicago responded in a big way with their first possession of the fourth quarter with another Swift touchdown that was set up by a long run from WR Kalif Raymond. Then, defensive lineman James Lynch intercepted a deflected Darnold pass and the road team paid it off with a third touchdown from Swift to give them their final winning margin of 34-17. (Box score)
Why the Bears Won
They kept Smith-Njigba in check for the most part and moved the ball successfully on the Seattle defense.
Key Moment
Raymond’s 39-yard run came on a backwards pass on a 3rd and 4. If they had not converted it the Seahawks would have had the ball back trailing by only one score. Instead, they got a touchdown and never looked back.
Stats That Matter
- Williams played mistake free football against an outstanding secondary. Throwing for 247 yards and a touchdown.
- Swift had 69 yards rushing but the three touchdowns were even nicer.
- Rome Odunze had several long receptions and finished with 87 yards.
Bottom Line
Simmons instantly made the Bears defensive line significantly scarier just by his presence. If that unit can start playing like they did Monday consistently this is a very good team. If they can win in the madhouse in Seattle they are capable of doing it anywhere in the league.
Next Up
Chicago has yet another night game next week Sunday, November 8 at Soldier Field against the Buccaneers on NBC starting at 7:20pm CT.
