Chicago Bears Score and Recap (NFC Divisional): Rams 20, Bears 17 F/OT – Dramatic Comeback Comes Up Just Short in Season Ending Loss
The Bears found more magic in the fourth quarter in their divisional round matchup against the Rams at an icy Soldier Field Sunday night. They tied the game on another impossible throw by Caleb Williams in the final minute but this time they could not complete the miracle and fell in overtime to end a terrific season on a disappointing note.
Chicago took the opening drive into the red zone but came up empty when a fourth down attempt was intercepted by Cobie Durant near the goal line. Los Angeles took that turnover and drove 85 yards to take the lead on a 4-yard run by RB Kyren Williams as a light snow continue to fall.
The Bears responded with their own long march down the field early in the second quarter. They attempted to convert another fourth down and this time succeeded when Williams connected with wide receiver D.J. Moore for a 3-yard TD to even the score.
Chicago did a good job containing quarterback Matthew Stafford after the success of the opening drive. Cairo Santos kicked a 48-yard field goal to give the home team an edge but LA answered back quickly with their own FG by Harrison Mevis to make it 10-10 at the half.
The game was a brutal defensive struggle in the very cold conditions and neither team scored in the third quarter. The Rams offense finally starting to get some traction halfway through the fourth quarter and went ahead on Kyren Williams‘ second rushing touchdown of the day from 5-yards out.
Chicago got down to the goal line again and came up short on another fourth down but they got the ball back again at the 50 yard line with 1:54 on the clock down 17-10. The Bears went down to their final play and Los Angeles broke through on the pass rush forcing Williams to run backwards 20 yards. At that point, the comeback kid spun around and heaved a pass that TE Cole Kmet pulled down in the end zone for a 14-yard touchdown to even the score and send the crowd into a frenzy.
The game went to overtime and the road team came up empty on their opening drive. Chicago just needed a field goal to win the game and got the ball to midfield with a first down. That was when disaster struck for the home side. Williams had an errant throw and Rams safety Kam Curl made an incredible play to intercept it on an all-out dive at his own 22.
Stafford and Los Angeles took advantage of their second chance and moved the ball into Bears territory. They reached the 24 yard line and Mevis lined up for a game-winning 42-yard field goal attempt. It was hardly a sure thing with the Rams repeated special teams issues but this time the kick was true and Chicago went down to a 20-17 defeat. (Box score)
Why the Bears Lost
They came up short on too many fourth downs and they lost the turnover battle.
Key Moment
The Bears had all of the momentum in overtime and the interception completely derailed it. They never recovered from that and the Rams escaped with the victory.
Stats That Matter
- Caleb Williams had a terrific year and almost pulled off another miracle in this one. He threw for 257 yards and two touchdowns but the three interceptions proved costly.
- Moore made a couple of difficult catches including the first touchdown and had 51 yards.
- The Bears forced no turnovers Sunday which was exceedingly rare for them in 2025.
Bottom Line
It was an absolutely crazy ride for Chicago this season with improbable comeback after improbable comeback. Ben Johnson had an amazing impact on the team in his first season and Williams is emerging as a franchise quarterback. Unfortunately, it came up just short against one of the better teams in football but the future is bright. The Bears need to upgrade the defense to make sure they can take this team to the next level. If they do that, it should be a very good year in 2026.
Next Up
The Bears return for training camp in July hoping to build on an outstanding season.
