Why Tyson Bagent is one of the Best Backups in the NFL
The Chicago Bears are not known for their great quarterback play. Enter Tyson Bagent a Possible Team Savior
The Chicago Bears aren’t recognized as one of the richest quarterback teams in the history of the NFL. Their greatest quarterback was Sid Luckman, and he was great many years ago. Not in the lifetime of most of us have the Bears had a great quarterback.
But now, it appears as if the Bears are going to have a quarterback, in Caleb Williams, who will be capable of being the next great Chicago Bears signal caller. He has the skills, the tools, and finally the supporting cast to make it big. He should be able to turn the Bears into winners and help them advance their efforts to make the playoffs and eventually win a Super Bowl, their first in almost forty years.
Who Backs Up Caleb Williams?
What happens if Williams goes down? What will the Bears do? Do they have a capable quarterback available to handle the load should he miss time?
The preseason has exposed Bears fans to someone that they knew just a little bit about, but has suddenly burst onto the scene, having played extremely well. That player is backup quarterback Tyson Bagent. Bagent is a 25-year-old talent who is starting his third year in the league. He’s been solid since joining the Bears, and this preseason, he has really shown his moxie.
He showed the Bears something positive, and because of this, they rewarded him with a two-year, $10 million contract. The contract drew tears from a player who has shown a lot of toughness over the last two seasons in the NFL and in college, where he played for tiny Shepard College in West Virginia.
The Bears found a solid backup in Bagent. Of course, we hope that they will never need him, except in mop-up duty in a big win. But if the Bears should need his services, they have a capable player at the most important position on the team to try to help them move the ball and win games.
Bagent: The On-Field General
We have seen Bagent play very well this preseason. He seems to have a commanding presence on the field and is solid behind center. But Bagent was playing against second and third-string players. They aren’t the top talent that Williams will be facing. Should Williams get hurt, would Bagent be able to stand up to the kind of pressure he is going to see from the number ones?
Bagent seems to have a good grasp of the offense. He’s been a refreshing sight to some and may give us a little bit of peace of mind to think that the Bears might be able to squeak out a few wins should the primary starter, Williams, go down for a time.
The Security Blanket
Bagent is just that. He’s a bit of a security blanket for the Bears, and they know this. That’s why they signed him to the two-year, $10 million deal. They knew he could fit in, adequately, should Williams get hit with an injury, temporarily. Now, some do not feel that Bagent could effectively handle the team for most of the season should Williams fall early and for a longer period. The Bears’ season might be “over” if the somewhat inconsistent Williams ends up being out. But he’s still untested and may not be the answer for the Bears unless he can perform well this season.
Wouldn’t it be something if Bagent ended up being better than Williams in the long run? Anything is possible. Some undrafted free agents go on to have highly successful and even Hall of Fame careers. Kurt Warner is one of those guys who came from the shadows and ended up winning a Super Bowl while having a Hall of Fame career.
Could Bagent be the next Kurt Warner? Some think he could be, and if Williams falters, we might just find out.
Bagent the Savior
The Bears are a team poised for some great things if their quarterback and the rest of the offense can get going. The defense is a whole other story for another day, but they should be able to do just enough to help keep the game close. It all depends on injuries and what the offense can do.
If Williams should falter without getting hurt, the Bears might bring in Bagent and let him try it for a bit. If he does well, that’s great, and it’s a sign that the front office was wrong about Williams. It will be a huge disappointment, but if the Bears play better and win with Bagent, then they must go with him. We hope that it doesn’t come to that, but the Bears need to win, and they must go with whoever gives them the best chance to do so.
If it’s Williams, even better. If it’s Bagent, then that’s good too.
